So it’s been a month at the school and two months in Japan. The experience has been amazing so far. Everything is so different, so much to learn and it feels like I’m not able to take full advantage of all this. Only if there was someone to show me around and do things with…
At the school it has been going pretty smoothly I would think. No complaints, no trouble, kids seems to like me, teachers are super friendly, so I gonna assume its going good. I never seen so many twins before. There are 4 or 5 pairs of twins and quite a lot of mixed kids with the dad is foreign and the mom is Japanese. Stereotypical?
Golden Week! Spent the 1st day gaming with my friends and it couldn’t be better. Finally able to chat with them, and it makes me feel a tad bit better. Seeing everyone with their friends out n about on Golden Week while I’m doing things by myself isn’t the greatest feeling in the world. And I see so many kids with tennis rackets! Really wish I was in Van or that my friends were here at times like these. And Jesus it is hot here. 22 degrees already and I’m sweating. Katie and Eric, I hope you’ll be prepared in July!

So on Thursday, the elementary school that I teach at had opening ceremony. I realize I as a foreigner, I would never get a chance to see this but I did. It was an awesome experience, being able to see how Japanese schools work. The students are disciplined and well mannered. Everyone bowed, greeted each other, showing respect that I’ve never seen before. Even this 6th grader seem to have more confidence and is more mature than I am. He bowed, just as all the teachers did, went up to the podium and gave his speech to the principle and to the first grade students.
Then it was time to introduce the teacher for this year and I was one of them. God knows I’ve never done this before so I watched every little move each person made and followed them. Went up, bowed, introduced my self, and bowed again. God it was nerve wracking as I didn’t want to embarrass myself but more importantly, not to be disrespectful. My palms were sweating like crazy! Finally it was over. They sang their school anthem as well as their country’s anthem, didn’t know either of them. Last thing we had to do was meet with the PTA group. At least I think that’s who they were. Sadly this time I forgot to bow before leaving the room. Silly PL, probably looked like an asshole, but what’s done is done.

Gah, busy busy busy!

My world got flipped upside down, and back again.

Too much has happened within the last couple weeks. Never have I had to say farewell this many times to so many people I care so much about within a matter of weeks. First I left my family, and my irreplaceable friends. Then, within that two weeks of home stay, I never thought that the family would welcome a stranger like me into their home with open arms. Even though the time spent with them was very short, I felt that they really thought of me as part of their family and I couldn’t be ever more grateful for their kindness. Again, I had to say farewell and move on to the next part of my journey.

On my way to Komoro, Nagano, I was surprised that I got on all the correct transfer points. I was sure I would get lost some point along the way. (o_O)? Had a quick drop by in Tokyo, got a glance of the Tokyo tower, saw Mt. Fuji and the most amazing views.

Finally made it! After a long train ride, there was still lots to do. I went to the city hall, immigration office, and all around the area to gets things set up for school. When I was ready to crash for the night, it was definitely a surprise to move into my room, that was dirty, unfurnished, and lacking a lot of necessities. Thank god I got to talk to a few friends that day. Had a little meltdown and didn’t know if I was going to make it. (;_:) In the end, I pushed through, got my suit, got the room cleaned up, got all my shit together, completed the training, and now preparing for my classes for next week. Phew. Hope everything goes smoothly and quickly this year. Then I can do what I intended to do!
